A few months ago, Microsoft announced the new perpetual version for Office: Microsoft Office 2024 LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel). We will have it in its Office Standard and Office Pro Plus versions. Not everything has to be a subscription.
Like previous perpetual versions of Microsoft Office, Office LTSC 2024 will have new features including:
- New meeting creation options and search improvements in Outlook.
- Dozens of new Excel features and functions, including dynamic charts and matrices.
- Improved performance, security, and accessibility.
Office LTSC 2024 will not ship with Microsoft Publisher, which Microsoft announces is being retired, or with the Microsoft Teams application, which is available for download separately.
As with previous versions, Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 will continue to be a “perpetual” device-based license, supported for five years under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, in parallel with Windows 11 LTSC, which they also announce will be released later this year. On the other hand, they will continue to support the deployment of Office LTSC and Microsoft 365 applications on different machines within the same organization using a common set of deployment tools.
In addition, from their blog, they comment that they are also planning to release a new version of on-premises Office for consumers later this year: Office 2024. Office 2024 will also be supported for five years under the traditional “one-time purchase” model.
Office 2024 LTSC Release Date
The official release date is expected to be in the last quarter of this year 2024.
Office 2024 LTSC Preview
Since last April, we have already available the preview version of Office 2024 LTSC on Windows and MAC and, as part of this preview version, we find the following programs:
- Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access)
- Microsoft Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote)

Perpetual Licensing vs. Subscription
While subscriptions are the order of the day and more and more software is opting for this model instead of perpetual licenses, the reality is that, especially in medium-large volumes, perpetual licenses end up being more cost effective in a short period of time.
